Effective Functional  Chronological or Combination Job Resume

 

An effective resume most simply defined as a selling tool that outlines your skills and experience. The employer can easily see how you can contribute to the employer’s workplace. The goal of an effective resume is to highlight and summarize the person’s qualifications.

Now that you have created your list of accomplishments and qualifications, it is time to proceed to the next step. Determine which jobs you are interested in and qualified to do.  Different resume formats are available for you to use. The message you want to send to the potential employer will determine the type of resume used to target the job you are seeking.  There are four commonly used job resumes, chronological, functional, combination and targeted.

Chronological Job Resume
If you have a steady work record, the chronological resume is easy to prepare and highlights growth in skills and responsibility in a logical flow. You should be aware that this type of resume has some disadvantages. If you have no work history or gaps in employment, select a different type of resume.

Functional Job Resume
Use this type if you have no previous employment and developed skills from other than documented employment or frequent job changes and individuals with gaps of employment. The functional job resumes emphasis is skills rather than employment and is an organized list of your experiences that effectively disguise gaps in work. You should be aware that this type of resume lacks information about specific employers and dates.

Combination Resume Format
For career changers or those in transition the combination job resume shows growth in skills and responsibility. This is the perfect choice for individuals pursuing the same or similar work they have done in the past. A combination resume highlights the most relevant skills and de-emphasizes employment history. Your strengths from having a variety of jobs and the skills you developed are accomplishments. The combination resume has to be very well organized, requires the most effort to prepare, and works well when targeting a specific job or position...
